Roof Pitch Calculator: What the Slope Changes in Your Quote

Roof pitch is the one number on a roofing quote you can check from the ground, and it moves almost every other number on the page. This is what it is, how to measure it without going up a ladder, and exactly which lines of a quote it should change.

What pitch is, in one paragraph

Pitch is how far a roof rises over a fixed horizontal run. The trade writes it as a rise-to-run ratio against a standard run of one foot, and the same slope can be written as an angle in degrees. Both describe the same plane, and a roofing quote almost always uses the ratio, because every quantity on the sheet is derived from it. Pitch belongs to a roof plane rather than to a house: a porch, a dormer, or an addition can sit at a different slope from the main roof, and one number on a quote can hide that.

How to measure it without getting on the roof

There are two places to take this measurement, and only one of them is any good. Both keep you off the roof.

In the attic, against a rafter

Find a rafter that follows the main roof plane and is straight along its length. Hold a level against its underside, bring the bubble to center, and mark off a horizontal run of a known length. Measure straight down from the far end of that mark to the rafter. That vertical distance is the rise for that run, and the pair of them is your pitch.

Use a rafter, not a collar tie, a brace, or a strapping board. Those are installed for other reasons and can sit at any angle. Take the reading away from a sag, a splice, or an old repair, and take it more than once if the framing looks uneven. If the quote covers a porch or an addition, measure under that roof too. That is the reading the estimator should be using for it.

From the gable end, with a level and a tape

If the attic is finished or unreachable, work at an exposed gable instead. Set a level horizontally against a line that follows the roof, establish a run of known length, and measure the rise at the end of it. Stay on the ground with both feet planted. If taking the measurement would mean leaning off a ladder or reaching past an edge, stop and ask the contractor to show you their reading instead.

The attic method is the better of the two, and the reason is simple: it measures the framing that defines the roof plane. At a gable you are measuring against fascia, rake trim, and siding courses, none of which are guaranteed to run parallel to the deck, and perspective flattens the angle when you sight it from the ground. Treat a gable reading as a way to check somebody else's number rather than as the number itself.

What pitch actually changes in the quote

Pitch changes area before it changes anything else, and almost everything else on the quote follows from area.

The footprint is what the roof covers when you look straight down at it. The roof surface is longer than that, because each plane is the sloped side of a right triangle whose base is the footprint. Plain geometry turns one into the other and you can check the arithmetic by hand. In the default example on this page, a footprint of 1,344 sq ft becomes 1,503 sq ft of actual roof surface. Nothing was added to the house. The same house simply has more roof to cover.

Roofers price by the square, a trade unit of 100 square feet. The default roof works out to 15.0 squares. That is the net measured quantity, and it is the first number to ask for, before any allowance is added to it.

What gets ordered is larger. Shingles are cut at rakes, valleys, hips, ridges and around every penetration, and the offcuts are not recoverable. The calculator puts the default order at 17 squares. A cut-up roof justifies a wider gap between measured and ordered than a plain gable does, so a wide gap on a simple roof is worth a question.

Bundles follow the order. Asphalt shingles are commonly packaged three bundles to the square, which puts the default order at 51 bundles. Packaging is not universal, so ask which product is quoted and what coverage its bundles carry, then check the count yourself.

Underlayment covers the same sloped area, so it moves with pitch as well, but the roll count also depends on the coverage printed on the roll and on how far the courses lap. Ask for the product, its stated coverage, and the planned number of rolls. A line that says only underlayment, followed by a dollar figure, cannot be checked by anyone.

Two quantities behave differently and deserve to be separated. Ice barrier is bought by area, but how much of it a roof needs depends on slope for a reason the next section takes apart; the modeled area here is 252 sq ft. Drip edge is sold by length, and pitch lengthens the rakes while leaving the eaves alone; the modeled total is 156 lf. Ask for eave length and rake length as separate figures, because one perimeter number hides which of them the pitch affected.

The steepness thresholds that change the price for real reasons

Area changes smoothly as pitch changes. Price often changes in steps. A step is defensible when something about the work actually changes at that point, and there are three places where something really does.

Ice barrier

The International Residential Code sets out when an ice barrier is required and how far up the roof it has to reach, in section R905.1.2, and it defines that reach against the building rather than along the roof surface, which is why a steeper plane needs more membrane to arrive at the same place. You should check the edition your jurisdiction has adopted, and whether it amended that section, before treating any of this as settled for your house.

Low-slope planes

Water leaves a shallow roof slowly, and laps that shed water on a steep plane can hold it on a flat one. That is why a porch, a shed dormer, or a low addition may need a different assembly from the main roof, and why that area belongs on its own line in the quote.

This page publishes no slope threshold, and the reason is that we could not source one that applies to every product. So do not take a number from us here. Ask which covering is proposed for the low-slope section, ask for the instruction sheet that comes with it, and ask the contractor to point at the requirement they are working from. A contractor who can produce that sheet has thought about the transition. One who answers with a rule of thumb has not.

Working on the plane

Past a certain steepness a crew stops walking the roof and starts staging it: brackets, planks, more tie-off, material carried up in smaller loads. That is slower, and slower is legitimately more expensive. What is not legitimate is a multiplier with nothing behind it. Ask which planes are affected, what the crew will do differently on them, and how many squares are involved. A steep-roof charge that names an area and a method is a real line item. One that names only a percentage is a negotiating position.

What pitch does not change

Two things on a roofing quote have nothing to do with how steep your roof is, and it pays to know which.

The first is the benchmark rate. The Cost vs. Value Report publishes job costs for a defined scope, nationally and by region, and this page uses its regional figure of $975 per square for the default division. Pitch changes how many squares that rate gets multiplied by. It does not change the rate. The modeled total, $14,652, moves when the footprint or the slope changes, because the quantity moved. The Cost vs. Value Report's national figure for the same scope is $31,871, and the spread between its highest and lowest regions is 1.43×, which is why a national number and a regional number are not interchangeable and why neither is a price for your house. The US Census Bureau's divisions decide which states are grouped together in that regional figure.

The second is wages. The Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes a national mean hourly wage for roofers of $27.95 and a median of $26.65. Neither moves because a roof is steep. Hours move. A steeper roof can take more of them, and that is a real cost, but it belongs in the quote as time rather than as a different wage. Neither figure is what a contractor bills you per hour either, since billing carries supervision, payroll taxes, insurance, equipment, travel, overhead and profit on top of the wage.

So when a bid raises the price per square and points at pitch, the bid should say what the extra buys. Slower production, staging, a different assembly on part of the roof, additional membrane: any of those can be shown as a quantity and a rate. If the answer is that steep roofs simply cost more per square, you are being asked to accept a number in place of a reason.

The assumptions, stated plainly

Some of the figures on this page are published and some are ours. You should be able to tell them apart without digging for it.

Published, and traceable to the source named beside each one: the benchmark job cost and its regional variation, from the Cost vs. Value Report; the roofer wage figures, from the Bureau of Labor Statistics; the regional grouping, from the US Census Bureau's divisions; and the ice-barrier and drip-edge provisions, from the International Residential Code.

Geometry, and checkable with a pencil: the conversion from 1,344 sq ft to 1,503 sq ft, and from that surface to 15.0 squares. There is nothing hidden in it. It is the Pythagorean theorem applied to a triangle whose base is the footprint.

Our own assumption, and adjustable in the calculator above: the waste allowance that turns the measured roof into an order of 17 squares; the split that assigns $1,843 of the benchmark total to field labor and leaves $12,810 for everything else; and the coverage figures behind 51 bundles, 252 sq ft and 156 lf. Those are defaults we chose, not measurements we took, and we would rather you change them than believe them.

The one thing this page cannot do is tell you what a contractor near you will charge. It has not seen your roof, your access, your local labor market, or the condition of the deck under the old shingles. What it can do is hand you a quantity you can defend and a rate you can trace, so that an argument about a bid becomes an argument about a specific figure instead of a feeling.

Questions to take to the contractor

Every one of these has an answer a competent estimator can give on the spot. Vagueness on any of them is itself information.

  1. What pitch did you measure, on which planes, and where did you take the reading? If the porch and the main roof were treated as one slope, ask why.
  2. What is the net measured roof area, and what pitch factor did you apply to the footprint? Ask to see the sketch the area came from, with plane dimensions on it.
  3. Why does the ordered quantity exceed the measured quantity? The answer should point at valleys, hips, rakes, penetrations and product packaging, not at a flat percentage nobody can question.
  4. Which product is quoted, and what coverage do its bundles and underlayment rolls carry? Those two figures let you check the material counts without trusting anyone's allowance.
  5. Where does the ice barrier go, how far up the slope, and what area does that come to? Ask for it marked on the sketch rather than described.
  6. If there is a steep-roof charge, which planes does it cover, how many squares are involved, and what changes in the work? A charge tied to an area and a method can be compared with another bid. A percentage cannot.

Each product carries its own written installation instructions, and those instructions - not this page - govern the lowest slope it may be applied on. Ask for the instruction sheet for the product you are quoted.
